Bradley plan proposes to increase by 3 million out of poverty
Democratic presidential candidates Bill Bradley gave Wednesday a radical plan of $ 9.8 billion, it is said, “the elimination of child poverty as we know it.”
In a speech twenty-five minutes in a church in Brooklyn Thursday, Bradley unveils what his colleagues call the second element of its national agenda, behind health care: to reduce poverty.
“Today, in a period of unprecedented prosperity, I see a nation and I see that almost one fifth of our children are sick, fed, ill at home and poorly trained,” said Bradley.
An estimated 13.5 million American children live in poverty, defined by the government as an annual income of $ 16400 or less for a family of four. The population rose from 15.3 million since President Bill Clinton and Vice President Al Gore took office in 1993. Gore is also underway for the Democratic presidential nomination.
“In an era of peace … I see almost 14 million of our children, be denied their chance to live the American dream. This is not acceptable,” said Bradley.
One of five children living in poverty or, as Bradley said, enough children in a city with a population greater than New York City. He called a “Slow-Motion, national disaster”.
“The elimination of child poverty is a major objective,” said Bradley. “The first step is the commitment, I do so here and now.”
As for the massive health insurance plan proposed, Bradley’s poverty, the price of $ 9.8 billion per year, would have to pay, but for the federal budget surplus.
Bradley, a former three-term senator from New Jersey, is the only challengeur Gore. The vice president recently its strategy to focus more on Bradley’s campaign, which has increased in recent polls. In the past, ignoring Bradley and Gore focused on the Republican Front-runner, George W. Dir Texas Bush.
Bradley proposes an increase in the incomes of poor families through the development of several existing programmes of the Confederation. His ideas are:
An increase in the minimum wage of $ 5.15 to $ 6.15 per hour over the next two years, and then tie future increases automatically to a general wage increase in the median USA. For example, if the median wage has increased by 3 percent in one year, so the minimum wage.
Expand the Earned Income Tax Credit, using an animal, that the parents of three children or more to get the full tax credits, where the benefit is currently limited, after two children.
Increase child care paid by the commitment of the entire amount of parental care to comply with a dependent parent, instead retain a portion of States in return for welfare. This change would benefit more than 1 million families, after the campaign.
